9-20-12 (Thursday) Lesterville to Cherokee Pass, MO

52 miles
Ride time – 5 hrs 24 minutes
Average speed 9.6MPH

We are now 1,064 miles from Dorchester and 1,524 miles from International Falls, MN and we have 850 miles to go to get to Baton Rouge.

The last three days we have bicycled 183 miles through the Ozark Mountains - no wonder my legs feel like "Gumby"!

We left Lesterville this morning around 7:20AM knowing that we had 52 miles to pedal through more of the Ozark Mountains before we get to Cherokee Pass.

The man who checked us into the motel last night was right - there are a lot of hills and curves between Lesterville and Cherokee Pass.  Some of the curves were tight enough I was sure I caught a glimpse of our own reflector on our B.O.B. several times going around the curves.  Makes you feel like a dog chasing it's tail.  Once again we are putting on a lot of miles to get a short distance.  Today's 52 miles got us 29 miles by way of the crow.

We arrived in Cherokee Pass around 2:00PM and tried to check into the only hotel in town but although they said they were open no one was there.  We rode our bike across the road to the Smokehouse restaurant and had lunch/dinner and then came back to the hotel to check in.  We have about 58 miles to bicycle to Cape Girardeau tomorrow and it sounds like the terrain will flatten out somewhat.

As we were puffing and grunting to get up another hill along comes a semi filled with logs – we were not the only ones in granny gear on this hill.

John called the bike shops in Cape Girardeau as we need to pick up a few repair parts for the bike such as shifter cables, white lightening, pepper spray, and a tire and tube and new skewer for the B.O.B.
